I just wrapped up a short interview with Ted Schilowitz from RED, in which he told us (and all our live stream viewers) all about the new RED Scarlet (AKA Epic Light) digital cinema camera. I got to hold the thing and revel in its 3K glory; and while RED devices are notoriously never "final," this felt about as final as it gets. I don't want to repeat what's already out there regarding the resolution, accessories, dates, and so on, which are all googleable (and some not final), so I'll stick to general impressions and you can watch the video for specifics. A few beauty shots are included for you to covet. If that's true, Knoword lets you show it off... or find out that maybe it isn't as great as you thought. Knoword is a fast dictionary game. You'll be shown a definition along with the first letter of the word and you need to figure out what the word is. Once you type the word (correctly, mind you - spelling matters), you get points and get the next word. Initially you have 60 seconds to figure out the correct response; with each word you find correctly, you receive additional time. When you find several words in a row, you get a "Word Streak" badge. If the game has you completely stumped, you can always skip a word. This also requires a bit of quick thinking, because skipping a word results in a small point penalty. On the other hand, the clock is ticking... so is this word on the tip of your tongue, or should you skip it and go on to the next? You can also open an account and have your game results saved. If you're good enough, you may end up somewhere in the player rankings. There are a ton of timers available for Android, but most use the stock UI controls and emphasize features like multiple timers, saved presets, and others I don't really need. What I need is a fun, fast way to set up a timer and be able to move on. Tick! fits the bill quite perfectly. The UI looks kind of like an old six-shooter cylinder. You just turn the big dial around, and the minutes on the slider increment. Once you dial in the duration you want to count down from, just hit the big green 'ON' button in the middle, and the timer starts counting down. It's accurate down to a single minute. The only flaw I found is that, by default, it uses your phone's ringtone to alert you when the timer is up, so it sounds just like you're getting a phone call. Luckily, this can be changed. Quite a neat little free app, and as usual, you can find the QR code right after the jump. Then remember when Michael Jackson's death took things to a whole new level and did the same? Well apparently, neither of those events have anything on New Year's in Japan. As they note on their blog today, Twitter saw 6,939 Tweets per second (TPS) four seconds after midnight on January 1st in Japan. This is a new record in terms of TPS ? in fact, it more than doubles the previous record of 3,283 TPS set during Japan's victory over Denmark in the World Cup last summer. " In fact, on New Year?s Eve, that all-time TPS record was shattered more than 68 separate times within a single 3-minute period," Twitter notes. The wireless speaker system features two three-inch woofers and two one-inch tweeters with Bongiovi audio processing, a built-in lithium-ion battery with a grab-and-go charging base, and capacitive touch controls -- and, just as we suspected, AirPlay compatibility courtesy of BridgeCo. iHome's also developed a new iOS configuration app called iHome Connect that'll help you get the iW1 on your WiFi network quickly, although regular WPS setup is also supported. You can also charge your iPhone or iPod by plugging into the USB port in the back -- iHome is packing a cable in the box. Streaming from iOS was just as simple as with the Apple TV or Airport Express, and we only saw minimal lag between control inputs like volume and track changes, just as with an all-Apple setup. Interestingly, iOS only supports point-to-point AirPlay streaming right now, so you can only use a single speaker at a time, but if you're streaming from iTunes you can hit multiple speakers at once, regardless of vendor. iHome is still tuning the audio performance, so we'll reserve judgment on that until we get a review unit -- which should happen when this guy ships for $300 in March. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index. The Windows 7 taskbar has large, chunky icons. They're easy to hit with the mouse, but what's nicer still is that they're easy to count. You can easily see what's the third icon, for example, and so, hitting Win+3 would be like clicking that icon. That means if the application isn't running yet, Win+3 is going to run it; and if it already is running, Win+3 will switch between all open instances of that application, and even pop up a neat Aero Peek pane next to the taskbar, showing you thumbnails of all of the instances you're switching between. If have a few apps pinned to your taskbar and don't switch their order very often, very soon you'll know their numbers by heart, and using Win+Number could become second nature. Come back tomorrow for the next keyboard tip, or, if you'd like to read a whole bunch at once, check out Sebastian's epic list.
